Young people have a lot of great ideas which
seldom become reality. We
will provide funding to anyone between the ages of 10-24 who:
- Can
demonstrate that they have an original idea for a community
event
- Can write a proposal elaborating on the resources, cost,
manpower,
location and intention of the concept
- Has a designated intention for the funds raised by this
event
We presented a cheque for $1,500 to Delta Secondary School in Ladner and asked them what projects they felt this money would be best spent on within their school and/or community. A group of six Grade 10 students formed a committee and chose: Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) do a video presentation using their new ad campaign against alcohol and drugs aimed at youth, which was presented to Grade 10 and 12 students at an assembly. The students reactions to the video were evident by the tears rolling down their faces.
They will be also be spending part of the funds on an anti-bullying pink campaign in April called "Sea of Tolerance". In February, this campaign went global after receiving attention from Eastern Canada, where it originated.
In the Fall, they plan on attending an environmental camp which we will partially sponsor along with the kids doing their own fundraising towards it. They in turn, will incorporate our Discoveries Thrift Store into a broader green plan.
